Anna-Alexandra

The artist and poet on Island life in Mallorca, and her love of ancient cultures, philosophy and mythology.

Tell us a little about yourself...

"My name is Anna-Alexandra and I am an artist, poet and a model. I was born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria, before moving to Milan, Italy, and for the last three years, I have lived in Mallorca, Spain. I have studied ancient languages and cultures, philosophy and culturology. Topics from these disciplines are often present in my projects. I love to read and write poetry, and I’m also very passionate about cinema. I enjoy cooking and studying the healing power of plants."

Where do you draw your inspirations from?

"My work is inspired by mythology, philosophical and anthropological concepts and poetry, that is the basis of my exploration. Sometimes even when I'm reading a scientific text I can imagine how some concepts can be transmitted with the instruments of the artistic expression.

At the moment, I'm working now on a project about the feminine nature of the sea and about the female personifications of the water - LA MAR. This project was inspired by Mallorca, the sea and anthropological linguistic researches on mediterranean poetry and myths. Im very influenced by the primitive art and by the primordial female figure.

Many of my projects are about the feminine image, the mysterious feminine nature and its connection to the earth and to the circle of life. I’m aways thinking of how to reach and express through abstraction the sublime feeling of the relation between nature and this feminine energy. My work is also strongly influenced by Мatisse, from his sense of composition, colours and shapes."

If you could travel back in time, what period and where would you travel to, and why?

"There’s something in Ancient Greece which inspires me tremendously. If I could travel back in time I would like to visit some of the ancient Greek Mysteries.

For example, those on the island of Samothrace, one of the most interesting and old panhellenistic cults in the Ancient world. I am incredibly curious what it felt like to be involved in something so secret and sacred. Usually in the mysteries, everyone became equal, regardless of their social status. They went through different stages and rituals of purification and self-knowledge together until they would reach a metanoia — 'A transformative change of heart, spiritual conversion, change of mind'. It seems to me very beautiful and erotic in the same time."

What drew you to Mallorca?

"We had visited Mallorca a few times before we decided to move here. It was a very intuitive and impulsive decision, but in the same time, I was aways dreaming to live on an island. Close to the nature and to the sea. I love the sea.

For me, wellbeing is strongly linked to the pleasure and satisfaction of life. Of course It's a complex combination of emotional, physical and mental factors, but more than anything else, to me, it depends on the connection to our inner creative centre and intuition. Indeed, the wellbeing of an artist is strongly connected to their ability to express themselves, and I feel that Mallorca is giving me the right context and conditions to create."

Describe your style...

"I will use few lines from one of the poetic texts I love the most Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction by Wallace Stevens, "It Must Be Abstract. It Must Change. It Must Give Pleasure."
